Baldness

There are different types of male baldness. Some types are caused by the side effects of prescription drugs or strong chemical hair treatments. Other causes include diseases such as lupus and diabetes, or medical procedures like chemotherapy. Excessive stress can cause male baldness as well.

However, the most common condition is known as "male pattern baldness" (androgenic alopecia), which is a genetic condition passed down the male side of the family. In the early stages the hairline starts receding at the temple, the hair starts to thin overall, and a bald spot will usually begin to appear at the top back of the head. Hair loss continues until only a horseshoe of hair remains on the back and sides of the head.

This sort of male baldness occurs when the follicles that control hair growth and replacement begin to shrink and stop performing properly. It is thought that this condition is the result of an imbalance in the male hormones called androgens.

While the progress of male pattern baldness may be slowed down by certain FDA approved drugs, there is no known cure for this type of male baldness. Many patients have opted for hair transplant surgery which has proven effective.

As with any condition that affects your body, you should consult with your doctor to see what is causing your male baldness before you start out on any course of treatment.
